Survivorman

Survivorman: newyorker.com
by Sherman Alexi

Here’s a fact: Some people want to live more

Than others do. Some can withstand any horror

While others will easily surrender

To thirst, hunger, and extremes of weather.

In Utah, one man carried another

Man on his back like a conjoined brother

And crossed twenty-five miles of desert

To safety. Can you imagine the hurt?

Do you think you could be that good and strong?

Yes, yes, you think, but you’re probably wrong.

The Light Wraps You

The light wraps you in its mortal flame.
Abstracted pale mourner, standing that way
against the old propellers of the twighlight
that revolves around you.

Speechless, my friend,
alone in the loneliness of this hour of the dead
and filled with the lives of fire,
pure heir of the ruined day.

A bough of fruit falls from the sun on your dark garment.
The great roots of night
grow suddenly from your soul,
and the things that hide in you come out again
so that a blue and palled people
your newly born, takes nourishment.

Oh magnificent and fecund and magnetic slave
of the circle that moves in turn through black and gold:
rise, lead and possess a creation
so rich in life that its flowers perish
and it is full of sadness.

-Pablo Neruda

O Breath

Beneath that loved and celebrated breast,
silent, bored really blindly veined,
grieves, maybe lives and lets
live, passes bets,
something moving but invisibly,
and with what clamor why restrained
I cannot fathom even a ripple.
(See the thin flying of nine black hairs
four around one five the other nipple,
flying almost intolerably on your own breath.)
Equivocal, but what we have in common's bound to be there,
whatever we must own equivalents for,
something that maybe I could bargain with
and make a separate peace beneath
within if never with.
-Elizabeth Bishop

This is a super fun game called: help Carmen edit her proofs! Woot.
I don't normally futz around so much, but the light was so nice in that room I took a series of very similar photos and now am stuck. So, blog-readers, if you do exist, now is the time to make your voice heard! (The color is a bit shitty here due to blogspot, so do your best...) Thoughts on the edit?

Odd Book For Sale

video
I have decided to try something a bit weird, as you can see. This is my first little book, entitled There Can Be No Me Without You and Other Tales of Longing. I have made 10 editions of the 80 page image and text book, and signed the inside of each. I am selling them for $15 each. Also, Please disregard the mirror-imaging effect of this video. Email me at carmen.winant@gmail.com if interested! Song by TV on the Radio. PS- notice how my phone rings during this video about a minute in. Classic piece.

Old Pictures

So, I found these old prints. Kind of a smattering. They are all squares, but the formatting is fixed due to my scanner. I also didn't de-dust. Anyway, funny to see these images. They remind me of a lot. Of Everything.

**THE END** (sorta)

It has arrived. The one year anniversary of what is intended to be a definitively pre-determined project.

This blog began because I needed an outlet for my work, and ended up being an impetus to make more. I started out more rigid in only posting 6x6 color images, and branched out as I decided to include drawings and videos (thanks grad school!). On this blog, I have posted large format images of my cousins and disposable pictures of me peeing and personal journal sketches to drawings based on media sources. I have become (thankfully) less concerned with consistency and more with experimentation. The result of the experiment is thereby pretty schizophrenic. My only goal has really become to not to rely on text to tell a story.

Since beginning this blog, I have travelled to Berlin with Paul and moved to San Francisco from LA. I have cut my hair and dyed the tips. I have had my heart broken. I have made wonderful new friends and started a band. I have had my car towed twice. I have started my MFA and seen my work change dramatically (more drawings, less photos).

Mostly, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank thank thank you guys for being so masterfully supportive of my rambling efforts. Seriously. Though it embarrasses me to think that people actually look at this blog, it would be hard for me to post while believing that it disappeared totally into the vast ether of the world wide inter-tubes.

Fun facts (courtesy of google analytics):
This blog has had almost 2,000 visits (from 376 unique visitors).
23 people visited over 200 times (likely me, Paul, Mom, Molly, Rachel, Jo, Matt, Artemis, Joe and Jessie? Ha. Thanks guys.)
684 only stayed on the blog for 10 seconds or under. Bastards!
953 of my visits came from 35 countries outside of the US, including 3 from Malaysia, 2 from Sweden, and 1 from Papua New Guinea.
My highest hits in one day were on March 31st, were I got 116 visitors (thanks Le Love).
My lowest hits were January 11th, were I got 3 visitors. Sad.

I will continue posting sporadically, so please continue to check back! Just not daily. Instead, just Afterthought I guess (though I'll keep the original name of course).

Love,
Carmen

Family Picture

So not the point of this blog, but since I have been taking liberties anyway: I am at home this week and going through lots of old photos. I like this picture of us because it is Philly in fall, my dad is so young, and my Dad's dad was still around to be pictured at all. I wish he still was; he would make a great and willing subject. I have been thinking about him a lot recently. Ps: Cheeks!
