Experiments in Lighting Course

Hey bay area friends~
If you are interested in experimenting with the ways to use light in photography, I will be teaching the below course beginning shortly, and you should sign up!

Experiments in Lighting:
Photography is a medium of light. The key to making beautiful professional looking photographs is learning how to control light. In this course we will focus on shooting! Students will learn how to use everyday light sources to create beautiful lighting effects and will also gain experience with professional studio lighting systems. Because we want to move through as many different lighting scenarios as possible we will not spend time printing. Instead, the class will be collectively building an online blog that we will fill with images of our lighting experiments, thoughts and ideas. This will be a great class for students who want to learn more about the dynamic properties of light and become a more intentional and skillful shooter. Students are expected to have their own digital SLR camera with manual functions and a hot shoe connection for an external flash (or a PC external flash connection) and should be able to spend a couple hours per week outside of class to work on assignments in the studio and/or at home. Blog link and class assignments can be found at http://experimentsinlighting.blogspot.com/

Tuesdays 7-9pm 6 weeks starting

If you live in NYC

My friend Anila's boyfriend James is having a fundraiser for his Sierra Leone sustainable beekeeping project next saturday, October 17th:

Cash-Honey, a project of Globalhood, is a small-scale sustainable apiculture project working in rural communities in northern Sierra Leone. By supplementing traditional honey "hunting" methods with improved beekeeping and farming practices, Cash-Honey aims to stimulate economic growth within these communities while also helping to protect the biodiversity and habitat of local forest systems, including threatened populations of chimpanzees. Earlier this year we received a small grant from the Seed Fund to initiate the project in Sierra Leone this coming winter. Please join us on October 17 at Papabubble for a benefit for Cash-Honey. If you can't make it to Papabubble, please check out the website to see what we are doing.

Conflation Show

Conflation: a PLAySPACE gallery collaboration

Conflation, the first show in the 2009 - 2010 calendar for PLAySPACE gallery is the result of the collaboration between the directors of the gallery and a diverse cross-section of artists studying at CCA. Sectional pieces of an inflatable were given to students from different practices to explore the relationship between their work/interests, the material (plastic), and the inflatable as a whole. Through this, the process of creating work for the show was integrated into the process of constructing the exhibition space, allowing for both the exhibition and its space to influence one another.

By questioning the boundaries of a 'white cube', the inflatable serves as a means of fusing different practices to create an experiential space for interdisciplinary dialogue. Ultimately, this collaboration creates a new gallery in its materiality, which questions the nature of a gallery space, the artwork displayed and the interaction of both artists and the audience in the space produced.

The inflatable structure is the collective work of Tobi Adamolekun, Nick deMarco, Jay Dion, Sarah Dunham, Crystal Gonzalez, Adam Green, Liz Koerner, Eric Martin, Gabrielle Messeri, Maria Elena Ortiz, George Pfau, Harrison Pollock, Nicholas Riddle, Jess Wheaton, Hillary Wiedemann, and Carmen Winant.

Opening reception is Tuesday, August 25th 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Conflation will be up in PLAySPACE August 25th through September 25th, 2009.
